I wasn’t quite sure what working there entailed, but I needed money for drugs and I didn’t want to steal. There were several men and many women eager to “turn me out” and teach me what I needed to know to make money.

I hadn’t even turned 18 by the time I hit the hotels of the Oakland “stroll.” The Oakland vice cops routinely “jacked me up,” slapped me around, called me names, and once left me seriously injured on the side of the street to find my own way to a hospital. Never once did the police ask my age or offer any assistance. They just found ways to harass, belittle, and intimidate all the working girls and arrest us for various misdemeanors. Life was a series of rapes, beatings, near-death experiences and days in jail here and there followed by more violence.

When the brutality of the Oakland streets became too much for me, I came to Phoenix, where the cops were like Disneyland characters compared to the Oakland police, and the pimps left me more or less alone to ply my trade.
I tell you this because today, more than 20 years after my exit from the sex industry, I still ask myself “What if?” What if my parents had known what to do when they learned about my drug addiction and subsequent slide into sex work? In 1970, there were no support groups for bereaved parents, no Naranon for the families of drug addicts, no school counselors with skill in drug use intervention. There was only my mother and father and their shamed, bewildered silence.

The reality is this — there are many, many underage children plying their trade on the streets, in massage parlors, and in topless bars. Some are trafficked; some are there to support a drug addiction; many are single mothers supporting their children at a steep cost to their self-esteem. I was fortunate. I found a way out. I had supportive parents and was able to exit the sex industry, and now, two decades later, work to help girls exit the sex trade and offer support for family members who have loved ones in the industry. That is my passion.

Because She Matters will be starting a support group for parents and loved ones of those in the sex industry. Whether they are in the industry by choice, or trafficked and held against their will, the families impacted by sex trafficking need a voice. Because She Matters hopes to be that unified voice.
We can be contacted at becauseshematters@gmail.com.

Another story of sadness and exploitation

This takes place in Acapulco.

Exiting the sex industry

Here is the link to my recent radio show on Talk Radio. Words do matter.

The Tonight Show with Jay Leno

3000 W. Alameda Avenue

Burbank, CA 91523

Dear Jay:

I watched your show for years but I can no longer do so. Why? Because words matter, Jay. Without fail, several times a week, you refer to women in the sex industry as “whores” or “hookers.”

Jay, did you know that most women, especially in lesser-developed nations, are sold into the sex industry, often by their own relatives? Did you know that right now, in India and probably many other counties, children as young as three are gang raped for profit and infected with HIV? That in the United States, the average age of entry into prostitution is reportedly 13? That one study in Colorado found that prostitutes die at a crude mortality rate of 391 per 100,000 in comparison with non-sex workers, where the standardized mortality for the general population during this same time frame was 1.9 per 100,000? That every prostitute is someone’s son, daughter, sister, brother or mother?

Jay, using words like “hooker” and “whore” further desensitizes people who barely care when prostitutes die locked up in cages, are tortured, thrown from cars or are left dead near a river. Getting a cheap laugh at the expense of these victims, and yes, they are victims, is pathetic. I really hope you are better than that.

Please take time to educate yourself on the reality of the sex industry. If you took a few hours out of your life to learn the realities of the sex industry in this country and many others, I almost guarantee you would stop throwing those terms around. There is enough pain and suffering in the world without you casually contributing to it with your callous disregard for these victims.

Please refrain from using dehumanizing terms to refer to women and men, who by large numbers, have had few options in their lives.

Sincerely,

Watch this deeply moving video about sex trafficking in India

So for those of you who are trying to exit the industry or just need a place to go where others have been through what you have been through, visit this site for Sex Workers Anonymous. There are some meetings in different cities or you can begin one yourself.

The need for this work is tremendous. In September I'll be getting training in the intervention model in addictions. While I do not believe that prostitutes, except perhaps a few, are sex addicts, most have the issue of addiction that either preceded or came about as a result of their sex work. I know this: if my parents had the tools that parents today have with intervention models, I might have been saved from over a decade of terror. They just didn't know what to do. I know there are thousands of family members who know their loved ones are prostituting but do not know what to do to try to help. Intervention works for many, many addicts and I believe it can work for sex workers.

Keep visiting and I'll keep you up to date. Thank you to those of you who posted comments. We only know that many sex workers are in the industry by force and many would leave the industry if they had other ways to support themselves or could stop using drugs.

What we do here is try to provide support, not only for the sex worker who wants to leave the industry, but for the loved ones of sex workers who have few options to turn to regarding their own powerlessness and helplessness.

Check back, because we'll be posting the location in central Phoenix soon. We wrote to both the judge and the prosecutor and both responded. The prosecutor blames the flaws in the writing of the law against pimping underage children; the judge blames our "ignorance" of the mandatory sentencing laws in Oregon.

If we are to believe them, the last avenue for these any type of justice in the future would be to write legislators and ask them to enact stiffer penalties for cases of this type and to consider doing away with mandatory sentencing guidelines. Federal judges have bemoaned mandatory sentencing guidelines for years and apparently Oregon state judges are bound by similar guidelines, which effectively takes the "judge" out of the judge by disallowing his or her judicial discretion when sentencing.

On the only positive note to come out of this, the children were not charged with a crime as reported in a blog entry by the reporter who covered the story for the worthless Eugene newspaper. Also, the district attorney who contacted us assured me that the children are receiving appropriate help.

Writing class for ex-prostitutes

We run a writing class for women in a halfway house for women leaving the sex trade. This is our second time running this class. It takes place over approximately nine weeks, give or take a week. Our experience has been amazing. We've uncovered a few talents writers who have a remarkable story to share. In addition, we've helped the women get used to "journaling" to express their feelings.

As the class progresses, we will be developing a detailed outline so that if anyone else wishes to start such a class, the package should be sufficient to start you on the road.

In our class, we have one Ph.D. student who teaches English and a writer and ex-addict who left the sex industry over twenty years ago. As we move through the class, which culminates in our own poetry reading with featured guest readers, it is amazing how talented these women are, especially in writing shorter poems like haiku.

The teachers report that they receive much more from the class than the participants. It is simply amazing to watch as the women, newly detached from their horrific lives, blossom. Most of the gals in this class were drug abusers, so we are also dealing with their feelings as they detox and struggle to stay clean. Much of what we do we tie back to the twelve steps when appropriate.

As we get this package together, we are happy to share it with others who work with this population. I'm sure the model could be adopted for others, as well.

This class runs now only twice a year and is closed to women who are in a program that supports their exiting the life.

Business owner receives slap on wrist after he repeatedly solicits underage prostitutes

I was in Eugene, Oregon, last week when I came across this news article in the local paper, the Register-Guard. A Eugene former restaurant owner, Prasath Boudavong, received an incredible 240 days in jail after he repeatedly solicited underage prostitutes for sex. Apparently, the Register isn't guarding anyone, because they blithely reported on this travesty quoting a Eugene police sergeant who said that vice detectives showed that this man was a "prolific customer," not a pimp. To battle the trafficking of women, the U.S. government has spent about $300 million in the first four years of this decade.[1] Worldwide, attempts increase to inform legislators about the traumatic and widespread effects of international prostitution and trafficking. In addition, laws are increasingly being passed to inhibit the trafficking of women and children for prostitution purposes.

Two of the most relevant criminological theories regarding how women slide into prostitution, for few women who work in the sex trade will declare that their life-long career goal was to become a sex worker, are the theories of general strain and labeling.

Prostitutes do not become sex workers in a vacuum. In African American women who seek services to leave the life of prostitution, for example, there is a high “prevalence of multiple health-related conditions, including depression [and] post-traumatic stress disorder….”[2] Studies have found that posttraumatic stress afflicts women involved in the sex trade regardless of race, national boundaries, or socioeconomic differences.

In a study of 100 street prostitutes male, female and transgender, more than 60 percent of the responders had experienced violence during prostitution; 44 percent were raped while engaging in their work; and 42 percent met post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) criteria. Most researchers, however, would argue that this number is probably low.[3] Generally, other studies have found that women and transgendered men are more likely to be assaulted when working as prostitutes than are their male prostitute counterparts.

One of the most prolific researchers in this area is Dr. Melissa Farley. In her well-respected book Prostitution, Violence against Women, and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Farley contends from her study of 130 San Francisco prostitutes, 68 percent met the criteria for PTSD[4]. Logically, the higher the number of times raped, the higher the incidence of PTSD among the prostitutes.

The levels at which prostitutes suffer PTSD rivals Vietnam Veterans, according to a paper written by Melissa Farley and presented at the American Psychological Association’s 106th annual convention. Farley and her team interviewed prostitutes both in brothels and on the streets in San Francisco and six large cities in Asia, Africa and Europe.

According to the New York Times, which synopsized the article, “In a study to be presented today at the annual meeting of the American Psychological Association in San Francisco, researchers interviewed almost 500 prostitutes from around the world and discovered that two-thirds suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder. In contrast, the condition is found in less than five percent of the general population. Studies of veterans of combat in the Vietnam War have found that the disorder may be diagnosed in 20 percent to 30 percent, about half of whom have long-term psychiatric problems.”[5]

Street prostitutes appear to be particularly vulnerable to attack and therefore it would follow that they would suffer higher levels of PTSD than their counterparts who work in brothels, escort services, or in countries or areas where prostitution is legal. However, whether study participants operated in brothels or worked the streets and although less physical violence occurred in brothels, Farley found in her study that the frequency of the disorder is found uniformly among the various groups of prostitutes.[6]

It is clear from Farley’s disturbing study that posttraumatic stress is of momentous concern to prostitutes, whether they realize they suffer from it or not. Often, diagnosis is missed by social workers or medical providers who fail to ask important questions to learn if a person seeking help is involved in the sex industry. Shame often prevents current or former prostitutes from speaking out, much research shows. In fact, increasingly social workers are receiving training in detecting prostitution to correctly provide appropriate services by using non-threatening questions such as “Have you ever traded sex for drugs, food or shelter?”

Trafficked women face a daunting reality. Rarely able to speak the language of the country where they are shipped, loaded into containers or otherwise concealed, some suffering certain death—this is the truth of international trafficking in women. As Dr. Judith Herman said in her groundbreaking work on trauma, “People who have endured horrible events suffer predictable psychological harm. There is a spectrum of traumatic disorders, ranging from the effects of a single overwhelming event to the more complicated effects of prolonged and repeated abuse.”[7] Certainly, studies show, both qualitatively and quantitatively, that prostitutes endure unimaginable abuse.

Taking age into consideration, one study supported other literature that found that those under the age of 18 who had undergone childhood sexual or physical abuse and teenage commercial sexual activity are likely to have higher rates of PTSD than average.[8]

At this time, there are few shelters available for teenage sex workers hoping to leave the industry; instead, most services are geared to adult sex workers. Early intervention for youthful sex workers might alleviate the degree of PTSD they suffer if an earlier escape from a life of prostitution was available.

General Strain Theory

There is little literature on prostitution as it relates to the general strain theory, but there is literature on juvenile delinquency and drug use which examines the general strain theory (GST) which was developed by Emile Durkheim in his study on suicide and refined by Robert Merton and later by Ronald Agnew in the 1990s.

Agnew in his work Pressured Into Crime states that, “According to GST, people engage in crime because they experience strains or stressors. For example, they are in desperate need of money or they believe they are being mistreated by family members, teachers, peers, employers, or others. They become upset, experiencing a range of negative emotions, including anger, frustration, and depression. And they cope with their strains and negative emotions through crime. Crime may be a way to reduce or escape from strains.”[9]

The strain theory proposes that crime, especially delinquency, occurs as a result of the feelings generated by negative relationships with others. Prostitution frequently begins in adolescence and is considered a delinquent act. The average age of entry into prostitution, according to Farley’s study, is 15.[10] More current studies show the average age at about 13.5 years of age, although I am unable to cite them specifically at this time.

Much of the literature on sex workers paints a portrait of early childhood abuse, neglect and confusion. It is important to note, however, according to the strain theory that it is the experience and feelings of anger and frustration from failed attempts at achievement, failure of primary relationships with caregivers, or victimization that leads to the experience of strain.[11] How people cope with that strain appears to be one of two ways. The coping may be inner directed, with depression, or through substance abuse to mute emotional pain. The coping may be directed outwardly, such as violent anger, aggression, etc.[12] Clearly with sex workers, the strain is mainly inner directed.

Labeling Theory

The labeling theory found its roots in the early 1930s with studies of symbolic interactionist George Herbert Mead, who believed that the self was totally constructed in relationship to others in society. The labeling theory, however, which had its roots in a theory developed by Frank Tannenbaum in the 1930s known as the “dramatization of evil,” didn’t fully materialize until Howard Becker presented it in the 1960s in his groundbreaking book The Outsiders: Studies in the Sociology of Deviance. Labeling has been called one of the most prominent theories in criminology, but it has many critics. One of the biggest criticisms is that labeling focuses on lower classes while ignoring white-collar crime.

Once a woman enters into prostitution, often as a result of difficulties in childhood or her teen years and often coerced by relatives or pimps, it is very difficult for her to exit this lifestyle. This is where the labeling theory enters the picture. Once labeled as promiscuous or as a sex worker by the police or peers, the road to a normal way of life for these women is often virtually impossible to navigate successfully.

The labeling theory may apply especially in the case of transgendered prostitutes who are doubly stigmatized both by their gender differences and their prostitution, where they experience a “a host of issues ranging from sexual identity conflict, shame, and isolation ….”[13]

There is little literature on point regarding labeling theory and prostitution; however, there is a great deal of literature available regarding labeling and drug use. A more deviant self-label at baseline predicted greater drug use at research follow-up, giving direct support to the labeling concept of resulting deviance. Once self labeled, it is extremely difficult for the labeled person to shed his or her stigma. In addition, self-label and drug use was found to be cyclical, indicating that once adolescents categorize themselves as drug users after that behavior has occurred, they are likely to stay stuck in that mindset and to limit their associations to cohorts who engage in like criminal behavior.[14]

Drug use goes hand-in-hand with prostitution, whether the drug use occurs prior to prostitution and drug users drift into prostitution, or it is used antiseptically post prostitution to numb feelings of self loathing or rage. It appears that self labeling whether as a drug user or as a prostitute is a self-perpetuating and vicious cycle.

According to the conflict theory, those practicing certain behaviors are “labeled” by those in power. Once labeled, it is extremely difficult to avoid internalizing that label and escaping it. Among Black women who are prostitutes, they face the double bind of the cultural stereotypes of Black women as hypersexual and “animalistic.”[15] Black women are more heavily fined, more often convicted of the crime of prostitution and given longer jail sentences than their White counterparts. This makes escape from this life for Black women even more difficult. Indeed, they often remain trapped in a systemic pattern of racism. [16]

Today there is a great deal of controversy surrounding the attitude of the media, including music, toward women. According to Venita Carter, who runs the only prostitution reentry program geared to women of color, “Black men need to unlearn the lessons which are the legacy of white slave masters — Black women are not ‘bitches’ and ‘whores.’ Black women are not the property of white men on the plantations, and they are not the property of Black men in the ‘hood.”[17]

Telling their stories: prostituted women speak out

It is through the telling of these exploited women’s stories that we see how these theories appear to reinforce sex workers’ entry into and their inability to exit the world of sex work. Across the globe and largely thanks to the feminist movement, women’s stories of prostitution, trafficking, rape, abuse and torture have surfaced. In response to these horrific tales, there is more emphasis on international trafficking and the plight of young women tricked or forced into prostitution. I draw from this growing body of research to state unequivocally — the stories of these women support the two general theories of both the general strain and labeling theories. Women’s entry into prostitution often starts with strain and is exacerbated by labeling.

Many women who become sex workers come from the working-class poor and encounter many problems in their families of origin.[18] These researchers found from their study of other research that women’s relationships with their mothers were “severely conflicted.”[19] These women reported few attachments to a male parental authority. Most of their childhoods, they felt unwanted and rejected. Lacking money and resources to find shelter, many of these women drifted into prostitution while running from foster homes or juvenile institutions.[20]

Many studies have found female prostitutes had suffered incest and physical childhood abuse, which in turn “contributed to their entry” into prostitution.[21] In one landmark San Francisco study by Delancey Street founder Dr. Mimi Silbert, 62 percent of the women studied had been physically abused as children and 60 percent had been sexually abused by either a family member or family friend.[22] These numbers, however, may be low. In Farley’s study of 854 people currently or recently in sex work, 65-to-95 percent of respondents were assaulted sexually in childhood, depending on country of origin.[23]

It is little wonder, then, that these women suffer strain and drift into prostitution. Once labeled, most find themselves stuck in a self-perpetuating cycle of violence, fear and despair. That first step into prostitution is often a consequence, according to many researchers, of a process of violence, psychological abuse, stigmatization and estrangement.[24] These researchers say a drift into prostitution is central to their model of how women become prostitutes. Drift in my opinion, does not occur in a vacuum and research bears this out. The ground must be laid to force a woman to consider entering this life-slide trajectory.

It is precisely through this damaged self image that a perpetrator can persuade a young woman to sell herself. One women in a study Farley commented upon said that her “prostitution mentality” began after, at age nine, she was sexually abused by neighbors and family members.[25]

Regarding the labeling theory, stories abound of the difficulty of shaking a label once a ‘good’ girl has gone ‘bad’. And like much of the genesis of laws against drugs, laws against prostitution were enacted to prevent the corruption of ‘good’ women, women of virtue, higher up the socio-economic ladder, by lower-class ‘bad’ girls.[26]

Much like gang members are identified and catalogued, so are street prostitutes. Once a woman is found in the company of other prostitutes on the street, police often take her picture and her label as a prostitute becomes official. The label of “whore” or “hooker” is one that most women, once so named, cannot shake. One study in Trinidad among an offending population not limited to sex workers found that self-labeling, parental labeling and labeling by officials of the offender were particularly important correlates of participation in crime for women more so than men.[27]

In addition, any prostitution conviction follows a woman throughout her life. She may find herself explaining these convictions, even if they are misdemeanors, decades after she has left the industry, and often to unsympathetic future employers who may never get that image out of their minds. Once labeled a whore, the shame, stigma and shadow of this term may well follow her throughout her lifetime.

While feminists have sought to change the label of prostitute to victim, the debate in feminist circles has been intense. There are those feminists such as Margo St. James, founder of Call Off Your Old Tired Ethics (COYOTE), who view prostitution existentially—a woman has the right to choose her profession. Others who work to strengthen international trafficking laws and protect women by offering alternatives to a life of prostitution view all prostitutes as victims of a process that, once a woman or child is entrapped, there is little chance of escape. This view enrages feminists such as those working in organizations like COYOTE and other pro-prostitution organizations. The anger is mutual with feminists committed to their role in helping women escape prostitution.

One need look no further than late night talk shows to hear what both men and women think of prostitutes. The terms “hooker” and “whore” are attached freely to adjectives like “cheap,” “easy” and, in crime shows that litter network television, “dead.” The prostitute is the perfect societal scapegoat, for who can’t feel superior to a tragic woman who haunts the streets for her very survival? It is little wonder that women who are caught in this vicious cycle find little chance of escape. One Canadian study found that prostituted women and girls were 40 times more likely to be killed than women who were not prostituted.[28] That figure is simply staggering.

However, until we can reeducate society about prostitution and its real consequences and put more resources such as re-entry programs geared to sex workers into place, the future looks bleak for prostitutes, whether in the United States or abroad.

[1] Weitzer, Ronald. Have you ever lost a very important person in your life, or had them taken away, due to your involvement in the sex industry, and/or your refusal to quit?

2. Have you ever set a quitting date, only to change that date forward, or canceling the idea altogether when the date came?

3. Have you ever been arrested, only to return to sex work immediately upon your release?

4. Do you find that you only get romantically or socially involved with either people who do not know what you do at all, or people who are also involved in the sex industry because it’s "easier than explaining what you do"?

5. Do you feel physically ill while doing what you do in sex work, or right after it’s over?
6. Have you ever sworn "never again" only to go right back to sex work because "things have changed" or told yourself it was "ok just this one more time"?

7. Have you ever tried changing your sex work habits, instead of completely quitting, thinking it was only "that" which was the problem? Example - sworn only to see regulars, or started doing something different like going from prostitution to stripping thinking things would be "different" because at least now you‘re not on the streets?

8. Do you find yourself removing people from your life, or choosing not to include them in your personal life, if they urge you to quit sex work?

9. Do you find yourself having people in your life that you don’t particularly like because they "help you out" with money and/or things that you need?

10. Have you ever placed the completion of a transaction in sex work ahead of your own health and welfare, or that of your family or loved ones? Example - left a small child alone while you turned a trick?

11. Have you ever enrolled in a class, seminar, or vocational school designed to help you quit sex work, only to miss more than one class so you jeopardize completion, or dropped out entirely, because you had "work" to do? Example - maybe even left in the middle of class because a client paged you?

12. Are you finding sex with someone you are presently involved with becoming less enjoyable and more of an "act"?

13. Do you ever have difficulty sleeping because of thoughts of the sex industry, or fear of the truth coming out that you were, or are, in sex work?

14. Do arguments, disappointments, or frustrations give you an uncontrollable urge to go back to sex work?

15. Have you ever performed a sexual act you were not comfortable with, and/or that may have physically hurt you because you "wanted the money"?

16. Have you ever accepted a tip from a client in exchange for not using a condom, or to perform a risky sex act, and told yourself it was ok because "it won’t hurt this time" or "they looked healthy"?

17. Do you spend large amounts of your sex work earnings on "impulse" buys and then afterwards wonder what that was so important to you at the time?

18. Do you hoard your money almost compulsively, or give all of it away, and find yourself not having any money left for essentials?

19. Have you ever been beaten up, or physically hurt by a client or pimp to the point of being hospitalized, or at least requiring medical attention, and then immediately after your release gone back to sex work because "you needed the money"?

20. Have you ever thought of suicide because of being in sex work, or the feeling that you’ll never get out or that you are a bad person because of it?

If you feel that you have a problem that may be helped by support from other women who have left the sex industry, consider attending a SWA meeting in your area, or starting your own.

Many sex workers either turn to prostitution to support their drug addiction or begin using to numb the pain of the lifestyle after entering the industry. If you have a drug problem, it is virtually impossible to leave the industry without first addressing this problem. We have a link to Narcotics Anonymous. Here, you can begin to address your addiction and find support that will help you find a new way to live.

The polemics of prostitution

There are many schools of thought about prostitution. Programs like Veronica’s Voice (see links) in Kansas City helps to enable women to leave the life of prostitution. There are also many first-world and lesser-developed world organizations that struggle for prostitution rights. Organizations like International Sex Worker Foundation for Arts, Culture and Education (ISWFACE), COYOTE (Call off Your Old Tired Ethics) in San Francisco (www.bayswan.org/COYOTE.html) and the International Union of Sex Workers work to decriminalize prostitution and improve sex workers’ lives worldwide.

Feminists, no matter their personal political bents, differ widely in their beliefs regarding the correct approach to prostitution. Generally, there is a clear distinction between forced and voluntary prostitution, according to author Jo Doezema, in her article "Global Sex Workers." She asserts that the current focus on eliminating trafficking, with a “woman as victim mentality,” works against the interests of all women. There are many women, she points out, who choose prostitution as a livelihood, or are forced into prostitution by poverty. International efforts to end prostitution make no effort to protect women who must by poverty or who voluntarily choose to remain in prostitution, she maintains. She refers to the “whore/Madonna,” “good/bad” dichotomy that characterizes much of Western civilization.

Laurie Shrage in her keynote address to the “Prostitution in a Global Context — Intertwined Histories, Present Realities,” Conference held at Aalborg University in Denmark in 1999, said this about the current feminist “victim” view of prostitution most widely disseminated. “These oppositions [whore/Madonna] configure the voluntary prostitute (the active, experienced, guilty Western whore) as someone responsible for her own fate and who deserves what she gets.” This, some feminists believe, leaves women who choose to or must prostitute due to poverty sadly at risk for battery, harassment by police and murders that are not only little investigated, but little noted by society at large.

Most feminist sex worker advocates are in agreement that involuntary prostitution and sexual slavery should be abolished; however, Shrage goes further, calling for abandoning the “forced / voluntary prostitution distinction” to allow a more focused view that encompasses the legal, health and financial needs of all peoples. “Those of us not part of these organizations [grassroots organizations of sex workers] would do better to stop wondering why the sex industry exists and to focus instead on the social forces that shape it . . . .”

There are few studies that analyze people’s attitudes toward prostitution, probably because the typical attitude is so negative. One need only view popular culture’s attitudes toward prostitutes, where each week Jay Leno’s Tonight Show used its bully pulpit to refer to these disenfranchised women as “whores” and “hookers” to realize that prostitutes are a target of derision and hence have translated into a safe dumping ground for violence which is perpetrated against them at staggering rates.

The sex industry takes a terrible toll on those engaged in it. However, to ignore the often tense controversies surrounding the current climate focused on sexual slavery and its very meaty funding appears to leave unexamined the real causes of sex work ― poverty and women’s worldwide oppression.

This blog will try to avoid the polemics surrounding the prostitution debate and offer solutions. We hope that we can rationally discuss varying theories as events arise; however, we take no position on the correct way to limit the system abuses of the sex industry. We only know what has worked for us to exit the industry and recover.

The Powell memorial

Saturday, about 100 people filled the pews of Encanto Community Church to memorialize Marcia Powell, who died in an inmate cage in the Arizona sun. In life, no one claimed her, but in death, perhaps she finally has peace.

Community activists spoke about social justice, including noted trial attorney Joy Bertrand, who outlined Marcia's arrest record, noting she was a mentally ill public nuisance, not someone who deserved prison. "Enough throwing away people because they exasperate us!" she told the crowd.

Criminal justice activist Jeremy Jameson spoke of the Lakota Souix, whose greeting "Ya-teh-hey" means "I acknowlege you." Perhaps no one was left alive who valued Marcia, but she was someone's daughter, someone's sister perhaps, someone's friend. Marcia's memorial service gathered one hundred people, taking time out of their lives, to say, "Marcia, we acknowlege you. She collapsed and was taken to the hospital where the Arizona Department of Corrections (DOC) warden had her removed from life support. The New Times reports that "Court documents listed Powell's 'alleged disabilities' as 'disorganized schizophrenia, polysubstance abuse, and mild mental retardation.'" So why was she in prison for prostitution?

The mug shot DOC media chose to run was one of a one-toothed, wild-eyed woman. Comments, some supportive but many hateful like one on Arizona Central that said, "Good riddance," began to flood blogs reporting the incident. Even though DOC released a different photo a few days later, the hate-filled comments continue.

I found it ironic as I watched the news that night: Marcia Powell's hideous death did not lead the local news, pushed down by the death of a Phoenix ball player's wife. In fact, the police dog that recently roasted in a patrol car seems to have generated more publicity than did Marcia Powell.

Although I have known firsthand how most feel about prostitutes for almost 30 years, her death only emphasized this fact: when sex workers are beaten, raped, strangled, bludgeoned, maimed, thrown out of cars and into rivers, disfigured, mutilated, murdered, tortured, it does not matter. They are whores, hence disposable. Marcia Powell was the rule, not the exception.

After a harrowing decade of debasement, I narrowly escaped the sex industry over 20 years ago. Today, I hold a masters degree, am a productive member of society, am respected in my career and volunteer with women attempting to leave the life. But I know that I am not doing enough to help other women, at least not on a policy level, where I can be most effective.

Yes, I can give a hand, one at a time, to a woman fleeing the life. Yes, I can share my experience perhaps because I was fortunate enough to have parents who never abandoned me and family who supported me in my efforts to change. But what about the women and children, male and female, who have no one to turn to?

In the United States, there are only a handful of centers that assist women in leaving prostitution, fewer still for those under 18. The average age of entry into prostitution in this country is less than 14 years old. I, too, ran away at 15 and became a prostitute at 16. It is only through Grace that I was able to claw my way back to sanity. And today, 20 years later, I am still damaged, suffer post-traumatic stress and live, for all purposes, a double life because I cannot talk openly about my past. Yet I am fortunate, I know that.

Marcia Powell's death was a clarion call for me, a call to begin to help change the paradigm that surrounds the sex industry. I may lose my anonymity in the process, but I am no longer so important. The pain of my silence is now greater than my fear of speaking out.

Tomorrow I will attend Marcia Powell's vigil, sponsored by a church that seems to understand the word "justice." There is no one to bury Marcia Powell, no one found to claim her. But I and many others will be there to honor not just her memory, but the memory of the thousands of slain prostitutes who died without justice. I am finally standing. I am no longer afraid to speak out.

God bless you and keep you until we meet again.
